This historical marker was erected by Air Power Park. The markings represent the 23rd TFW at McConnell AFB. It was retired from active service in November 1981. The F-105 or “Thud” as it was called, served as the primary attack aircraft in the Vietnam war, where over half of the total production run of over 800 aircraft were lost., This F-105 Thunderchief was built by Republic Aviation in Farmingdale in New York and was delivered on January 29, 1962.

The first prototype flew on October 22, 1955. Intended as a fighter bomber, it served a secondary role as an interceptor.

The Thunder chief was originally a private-venture study as a follow-on to the F-84F.

The F-105 Thunderchief was the last airplane produced by Republic Aviation before it became part of Fairchild Hiller.
